Whip that frosting.

So the other day, for the VERY first time, I successfully made frosting. Yes, I know I am a little bit behind in the baking skills department - but now I've finally reached the basics (well sort of).

The occasion was for a 1960s Madmen Party and for the week before, I contemplated, changed my minds a couple of times of what to bring to this gathering. I thought maybe a birthday cake, maybe a layered dessert cake, maybe an appetizer? Anyways, I finally decided the day of after a few hours of sleep that I would make cupcakes with a simple buttercream frosting.

I must admit the cupcakes were from a box- the Betty Crocker type specialty (my baking levels haven't quite made it to making things actually from scratch yet). I looked up one of my go-to places for recipes/party/decorating ideas a.k.a my friend Martha Stewart. Yes, I know what most of you are thinking, Martha, really? Yes - she actually has some pretty good ideas despite maybe her personal reputation. Besides the point, I toke this buttercream frosting from Martha Stewart Website.

Really - there is only three ingredients needed for this frosting:

  • 12 ounces (3 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 pound confectioners' sugar, sifted
  • 1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
Essentially the instructions is to: a) beat the butter till creamy, b) start to add the sugar a cup at a time to the butter and beat it again, c) when all done with adding the sugar, add the vanilla extract in with the butter mixture (should now be creamy/ frosting like), d) add some food coloring if desired, e) use and spread frosting.

Here's the finally product:

Aside: since I don't do a whole lot of baking, my kitchen is not really equipped with the most fancy of baking stuff, so to spread the frosting, I used a toothpick to "swirl" the frosting on to the cupcake. Ingenious? I think so - plus very economic!

All and all pretty impressed with the frosting. Here's to the 1960s/ Madmen/ Em's 24th!
